    The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing and attaining phlebotomy samples of all types except arterial on in-patients and out-patients.

    Responsibilities

    • * Complies with DRMC polices and procedures, with accreditation agency requirements, federal, state, or local law and regulations.
    • Performs approved laboratory test menu for Phlebotomist, such as send-outs and bacti cultures
    • Performs the proper procedures to obtain specimens for special laboratory tests; i.e. cultures, PKU’s, 24-urines, fasting-blood specimens, glucose tolerance tests, nasal smears, fertility tests and urinalysis
    • Skillful, efficient and courteous phlebotomy techniques for adult and pediatric venipuncture in various sites, i.e. arm, hand, wrist and leg
    • Skillful, efficient and courteous phlebotomy techniques for finger sticks and heel sticks. Special technique is necessary in the neonatology unit.
    • Organization of all phlebotomy rounds and requisitions for phlebotomy particularly AM pickups.
    • Demonstrates a working knowledge of all phlebotomy equipment, i.e. needles, tubes, etc.
    • Reporting to outlying phlebotomy stations, i.e. nursing homes, physician’s offices
    • General Duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    • HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE OR EQUIVALENT REQUIRED.
    • PRIOR EXPERIENCE WORKING IN THE MEDICAL SETTING
    • MUST HAVE TAKEN A CERTIFIED PHLEBOTOMY COURSE REQUIRED
    • MUST ATTAIN CERTIFICATION WITHIN 2 YEARS OF BEING HIRED TO ROLE
    • ABILITY TO WORK INDEPENDENTLY.
    • COMPUTER SKILLS

     

    IF YOU HOLD A CERTIFICATE THAT DOES NOT EXPIRE-YOU MUST BE A MEMBER WITH EITHER ASCP OR AMT. IF YOU ARE ON A MAINTENANCE PROGRAM WITH AN EXPIRATION -- YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO BE A MEMBER BUT MUST MAINTAIN YOUR CERTIFICATION.
