The Recreational Therapist I, under supervision of the Lead Recreational Therapist or Recreational Therapist II, formulates, organizes, and implements a recreational therapy program to provide assistance with rehabilitation to the activities of daily living to an assigned patient population.

Responsibilities

*Complies with DRMC policies and procedures, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state or local law and regulations

*Demonstrates competency in Recreational Therapist I role, as evidenced by:

  • Collaborates with other multidisciplinary team members to provide quality patient care
  • Communicates with patients/significant others regarding patient’s plan of care
  • Assists Lead or Recreational Therapist II with formulating and updating patient’s recreational treatment plan
  • Monitors and assists patients in group and individual Recreational Therapy activities (i.e. volleyball, age appropriate games and hobbies, etc.)
  • Develops new recreational activities to meet patient needs
  • Teaches, supervises, and counsels the patients and significant others in the Recreational Therapy needs of the patient
  • Participates in multidisciplinary team meetings
  • Transports patients in hospital-owned van to outside activities (i.e. bowling, etc.)

*Participates in the development of new staff as evidenced by but not limited to:

  • Actively participates in the orientation including cultural and social integration of new staff
  • When serving as preceptor, collaborates with staff member and manager/charge nurse to manage the learning process and develop individualized action plans as needs are identified

*Demonstrates professional accountability as evidenced by but not limited to:

  • Achieves educational credits to meet hospital and/or licensing/certification requirements
  • Presents information obtained at education conferences to staff members
  • Participates in the development and advancement of departmental standards, policies, and other clinical/professional initiatives
  • Conducts self in professional manner in dress, actions, and interpersonal communication
  • Assures environment of safety for patients, significant others, and coworkers
  • Informs Department DIrector of patient care situations and departmental problems as appropriate
  • Demonstrates effective problem solving skills for clinical and departmental issues

Unit Specific Duties

*Assures an environment of patient safety through:

  • Performs suicidal/observation checks every 15 minutes
  • Complies with contraband policy
  • Manages changes in behavior that puts the patient or others at risk
  • Complies with restraint/seclusion policies

*Facilitates an efficient and timely review and disposition of referrals consistent with department policy

 

 

*Maintains current Healthcare Provider (BLS) certification

 

*Completes Comprehensive Crisis Management training model

Qualifications

  • Customer service attitude required
  • Bachelors Degree in recreational related field required
  • Experience in recreation therapy activities preferred
  • Experience working with mentally ill adults and adolescents required
  • Current Pennsylvania driver’s license required
  • Current Healthcare Provider (BLS) certification required or must obtain within six months of start date in Behavioral Health
  • Completion of Comprehensive Crisis Management training required or must obtain within 12 months of start date in Behavioral Health
