The Unit Secretary, under the direction and supervision of the Second Floor Med/Surg Director, is responsible for performing clerical and receptionist duties.

Responsibilities

*Complies with DRMC policies and procedures, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state or local law and regulations

*Demonstrates competency in Unit Secretary role as evidenced by but not limited to:

  • Accurately and efficiently transcribes physician orders
  • Performs various clerical duties to support the nursing staff including scheduling of follow up appointments for patients, faxing reports, notifying physician offices of consults, and transporting of patients as needed
  • Answers nurse call system and directs caregivers as required
  • Maintains patient’s records per policy (i.e. restocks forms, universal chart order, etc.)
  • Accurately and efficiently performs 24 hour order checks

*Participates in the development of new staff as evidenced by but not limited to:

  • Actively participates in the orientation of new staff, including cultural and social integration

*Demonstrates personal accountability as evidenced by but not limited to:

  • Achieves educational credits to meet hospital requirements
  • Participates in the improvement of department through individual or team contributions
  • Conducts self in business manner in dress, actions, and interpersonal communication
  • Assures environment of safety for patients, significant others, and coworkers
  • Informs Director/Supervisor/Clinical Manager of patient care situations and departmental problems as appropriate
  • Demonstrates effective problem solving skills for clinical and departmental issues

*Maintains Heartsaver certification

 

Qualifications

  • Customer service attitude required
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Typing and computer skills required
  • Medical Terminology training required
  • Heart Saver certification required or must obtain within 6 months of start date as Unit Secretary
