Responsibilities

  • * Complies withPH DUBOIS polices and procedures, with accreditation agency requirements, federal, state, or local law and regulations.
  • Evaluates patients for serious medical and/or psychiatric problems requiring immediate attention by asking questions and observing physical signs. Notifies the Emergency Department or, if necessary, quickly takes the patient to the ED for medical attention.  Is vigilant for patient/visitor/employee safety concerns at all times and reports them to the proper person/department.
  • Operates the push-button switchboard and integral in-house paging system.  Operates push-button two-way radio.
  • Has familiarity with functions of all hospital departments and personnel so that calls/patients/visitors can be referred to the appropriate person or department.
  • Is a source of information to the public and Medical Center departments regarding DRMC programs and services and also of community medical resources.   
  • Monitors sound/light alarms located at switchboard and responds to all alarms immediately with appropriate action. Answers emergency calls and pages the appropriate code and/or personnel to respond.
  • Positively identifies patients in adherence with the Administrative Policy “Identification – Patient” guidelines.  Interviews and registers patients accurately and scans documents correctly into HPF to insure the proper flow of information throughout the Medical Center.
  • Obtains proper consents for treatment and authorizations for billing.
  • Reads and interprets physician orders.  Is able to communicate effectively with physicians and/or their office staff to obtain orders for patients who present without one.  Assures regulatory compliance by following the guidelines in Administrative Policies “Advance Beneficiary Notice” and “Complete Orders for Outpatient Services.”
  • Maintains a petty cash drawer. Makes change for patients and visitors. Assists, if necessary, with the collection of patient valuables for deposit in the safe. Receives payments for services rendered and on account. Uses basic accounting knowledge to balance the cash drawer and cash receipts at the end of each shift.  Is responsible for securing Service Recovery items/cash for distribution throughout the Medical Center as requested.
  • Sorts and distributes daily reports to appropriate departments. 
  • Keeps department logs, schedule books, bed boards, and files up-to-date.
  • Keeps current on insurance plans in which DRMC participates to optimize reimbursement for the medical center and to reduce unplanned patient out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Uses all available resources, including, but not limited to the internet and calls to the Business Office, to check insurance coverage of patients.  Takes all steps necessary to enter complete and accurate insurance information to minimize rebilling which causes delays in reimbursement.
  • Has knowledge of basic maintenance of machines in the department.
  • Has knowledge of computer system functions and procedures for handling system/machine problems and downtime procedures.
  • Assists in training/orienting new staff members.
  • Accurately maintains Physician Unavailability and On-Call documents in the computer so that key Medical Center departments have up-to-date information when they need to contact a physician.  Takes calls from physicians signing out and, in a professional, friendly manner, is able to obtain from the physician all information that is needed for the sign-out.
  • Provides the supervisor with suggestions to increase department productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness.
  • Is able to diplomatically, and in a positive and friendly, manner communicate with all Medical Center staff members, physicians, visitors, patients and their family members, and with the general public in requesting or giving information. Is tactfully able to refuse to give information that would be in violation of HIPAA privacy regulations and to guide employees to find information (phone numbers, beeper numbers, etc.) themselves instead of relying on the switchboard to do this for them.
  • General duties as directed.

Qualifications

  • Must have High School Diploma or equivalent 
  • Associates Degree or at least one year’s experience working in a business-related field preferred.
  • Computer skills required.
  • Must have at least average typing skills.
  • Must have a positive attitude and good reasoning and communication skills.
  • Must have the ability to work effectively in a highly team-oriented environment to solve problems and achieve departmental goals.
