The Supervisor, under the supervision of the Department Director, manages patient care, assures quality, and assists in the supervision of other professionals and health care workers.


*Complies with PENN HIGHLANDS DUBOIS policies and procedures, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state or local law and regulations

Demonstrates competency in Supervisor role as evidenced by but not limited to:


Participates in the formulation and implementation of department goals, policies, and procedures


Actively participates as a member of a hospital committee as appropriate


Provides ideas and input for developing services and marketing approaches for their departments


Organizes the department and assumes responsibility for the activities of the department


Ensures the hospital policies and procedures are being followed by departmental staff


Actively supports, monitors and evaluates changes in department


Conducts monthly department safety rounds, documents findings, and collaborates with Department Director to solve patient safety problems


Conducts performance reviews as assigned by Department Director which may include probationary and annual reviews


Actively coordinates the team of caregivers, for which he/she is responsible, to deliver quality patient care and service on all shifts


Prompts RN co-workers to function as managers of patient care and to monitor patient progress towards established outcomes


Ensures Registered Nurses intervene appropriately and in a timely manner for the patient


Resolves problems that arise on the department including dealing with department staff, physicians, ancillary personnel, etc., to begin problem solving immediately


Assists with completing time and attendance


Covers department staffing schedule in collaboration with the Department Director as needed


Communicates problems/issues to Department Director in a timely manner


Communicates serious department issues to  appropriate Vice President on a daily basis in the absence of the Department Director


Reports broken equipment, obtains supplies and performs other functions necessary to ensure that adequate, functioning equipment and supplies are

available for all shifts


Attends meetings as assigned by Department Director


Ensures completion of Performance Improvement functions as assigned by Department Director
Uses the nursing process in the delivery of care as evidenced by but not limited to:


Obtains patient history and conducts appropriate patient assessment


Collaborates with the health care team to develop and manage the plan of care, involving patient/significant other whenever possible


Implements appropriate nursing care to meet patient needs


Evaluates patient's response to medical, nursing, and other disciplines’ interventions and takes appropriate action

Demonstrates critical thinking and clinical competency in the delivery of patient care as evidenced by but not limited to:


Administers medications, monitors effectiveness, and takes appropriate action as needed in accordance with policies and procedures


Proficient in starting and managing IV administration


Responds appropriately to changes in patient condition


Consults medical record for pertinent patient information such as diagnostic test results, physician progress notes


Implements the plan of care according to physician’s, nursing orders, clinical pathways, and nursing care standards


Appropriately delegates to and manages patient care delivered by support staff
Manages patient teaching and discharge planning as evidenced by but not limited to: 


Identifies patient learning needs on admission and throughout the episode of care


Collaborates with health care team to develop and implement the discharge plan


Prepares patient and significant others for appropriate home management regarding medications and the follow up plan of care
Participates in the development of new staff as evidenced by but not limited to:


Actively participates in the orientation including cultural and social integration of new staff


When serving as preceptor, collaborates with staff member and Department Director  to manage the learning process and develop individualized action plans as needs are identified

Demonstrates professional accountability as evidenced by but not limited to:


Achieves educational credits to meet hospital and/or licensing/certification requirements


Presents information obtained at education conferences to staff members


Participates in the development and advancement of departmental standards, policies, and other clinical / professional initiatives


Conducts self in professional manner in dress, actions, and interpersonal communication


Ensures environment of safety for patients, significant others, and coworkers


Informs Department Director of patient care situations and departmental problems as appropriate


Demonstrates effective problem solving skills for clinical and departmental issues 

Verbalizes/demonstrates proper set up for colonoscopy and endoscopy using Olympus equipment

Verbalizes/demonstrates proper cleaning of equipment using OER Pro/Steris 1E.

Verbalizes/demonstrates proper use of CO2

Demonstrates and maintains continuing clinical competency in performing ManoScan.

Demonstrates and maintains continuing clinical competency in performing Digitrapper.

Demonstrates proper handling, labeling, and disposition of specimens.

Participates in department on call system.

Ensures required supplies, instruments, and/or special equipment are available and functioning properly prior to the start of the procedure.

Maintains current CP R and  ACLS  certifications.

General duties as directed.





  • Current Pennsylvania Registered Nurse License or Temporary Practice Permit required
  • Bachelor Degree in Nursing or related field preferred
  • Three years current acute care experience required
  • Healthcare Provider (CPR) certification within six months
  • ACLS and CNOR certifications within 12 months of start date in position/department;
  • Desire to develop management skills and accept responsibility for departmental functioning with, and in the absence of, the Department Director;
  • Progressive and successful work history
